Jack Sparrow with a goat.
- "No! Wait! Sold to the man with the goat!"
"I only borrowed the goat!" - ―Auctioneer and Nigel
A goat is a subspecies of goat domesticated from the wild goat of southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. The goat is a member of the family Bovidae and is closely related to the sheep as both are in the goat-antelope subfamily Caprinae. There are over three hundred distinct breeds of goat. Goats are one of the oldest domesticated species. Goats have been used for their milk, meat, hair, and skins over much of the world.
Goats were also used as domestic pets. While living in Shipwreck Cove, a pirate named Nigel was known to own a goat.[1]
Behind the scenes
- "I will start the bidding at one pieces of eight - and with this one I’ll throw in a goat."
- ―Auctioneer
Goats appeared in Walt Disney Pirates of the Caribbean.[2] The term "goat" first appeared in Jason Surrell's book Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies.[3]
In the short film Tales of the Code: Wedlocked, the Marquis D'Avis won the auction for Scarlett and Giselle with either seven hundred pieces of silver and two goats or alternatively seven hundred and two goats.[1] The final bid was supposed to be 700 pieces of silver and two goats; one girl loved the money, one loved the idea they just got goats. But the way actor Walter Williamson delivered the Marquis D'Avis's line suggested he bidded 702 goats. When the film crew realized the confusion during the read, they decided to keep it just for the confusion.[4][5]
In Terry Rossio's original 2012 screenplay draft for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, two goats were going to be aboard a longboat along Scrum during Jack Sparrow's hallucinations with a crossbow visible before being quickly embraced by the midst.[6]
