A prison, also known as a jail, was a facility in which individuals and convicted criminals were confined involuntarily (against their will) as prisoners, and therefore denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state as punishment for various crimes. Authorities most commonly use prisons to imprison people charged with crimes until their trial; those who have pled or been found guilty of crimes at trial may be sentenced to a specified period of imprisonment. In simplest terms, a prison can be a building or camp in which people are legally detained as a punishment for a crime they have committed.
During the Age of Piracy, there were many prisons around the world. Castillo del Morro had a jail in the town of Puerto Dorado.[1] Fort Charles prison was a prison fortress located at Port Royal.[2][3] An unnamed Turkish Prison was a prison fortress located in the Mediterranean Sea.[3] The isle of Saint Martin had a prison.[4] A prison aboard a ship was called a brig.
