Two redcoated sergeants carrying halberds.

A halberd is a two-handed pole weapon that came to prominent use by the 16th century. The weapon consisted of an axe blade topped with a spike mounted on a long shaft. It could also have a hook or thorn on the backside of the blade for grappling mounted combatants and protecting allied soldiers. The halberd continued to see use well into the age of firearms, carried as a badge of rank and used to signal troops by military sergeants and Royal Marines in the 18th century.

History

By the search for the Dead Man's Chest, halberds were used by redcoats, notably when Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Trading Company arrived to Port Royal, Jamaica.[1] Edward "Blackbeard" Teach had halberds on the wall of the captain's cabin of the Queen Anne's Revenge by the quest for the Fountain of Youth.[2][3] About one year later, halberds were used by the redcoats stationed in Saint Martin.[4]

Behind the scenes

Halberds first appear in Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean.[citation needed] They made more prominent appearances in the movie franchise, beginning with the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[1]
