A xebec.

A xebec.

A xebec was a sailing ship that had a long overhanging bowsprit and aft-set mizzen mast. It originated in the Barbary states, primarily used by Barbary pirates, and was used mostly for trading. The term could also refer to a small, fast vessel of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, used almost exclusively in the Mediterranean Sea.

Xebecs were most notably used during the war against Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Trading Company.[1]

Behind the scenes

Xebecs first appeared in the 2003 video game Pirates of the Caribbean.[citation needed]
