A second mate was an officer and licensed member of the deck department of a merchant ship. The second mate was the third in command and a watchkeeping officer, customarily the ship's navigator. The second mate was often the medical officer and in charge of maintaining distress signaling equipment.

Second mates first appear in the 2011 novel The Price of Freedom by A. C. Crispin.[1]

Second Mate Productions, Inc. was credited with the production of the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, for purposes of copyright law in the United Kingdom.[3][4]
