- "What in the Seven Seas is that?"
"Yuck. That'll put me off me grog for a fortnight." - ―Pirate Guard Chief and Lefty
Grog was a term used for a variety of alcoholic beverages. Following England's conquest of Jamaica in 1655, rum gradually replaced beer and brandy as the drink of choice for the British Royal Navy. At some point afterwards, to minimise the subsequent illness, drunkenness, and disciplinary problems, a mixture of rum and water known as a "grog" both diluted its effects and accelerated its spoilage, preventing hoarding of the allowance.
History
Grog was a drink by the time of the Age of Piracy, grog was a drink enjoyed by pirates and sailors of the British Royal Navy. When a surgeon named Grogan got drunk from grog, he accidentally severed the leg of a Navy officer.[1] Arabella Smith used to pour grog at the Faithful Bride tavern before joining young Jack Sparrow and the crew of the Barnacle.[2] The morning after the departure of the Sea Star from the Isle of Man the ship's bell rang and the officer called all hands on deck, and by the time the crew was assembled some men were already swilling grog.[3] During the time when Jack Sparrow was trapped in Davy Jones' Locker, he brought a combination of Grog to another pirate from the Fiddler's Green Tavern.[4]
Behind the scenes
- "Sure by now the whole town must be captured by them rollickin' pirates. Why, they've set half the town on fire, and drank nearly half the grog."
- ―Unknown
Grog is first mentioned in Thurl Ravenscroft's 1966 narration recorded for Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean.[5] Jason Surrell's 2005 book Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies detailed the "Crew's Quarters" in Dead Man's Cove, where two dead skeletal crewmen have the time of their afterlives in the ruins of a dockside tavern filled with every whiskey, rum, and grog known to piratedom.[6] Grog makes its first known in-universe appearance in the video game adaptation for the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[7]
Pirates of the Caribbean Online launched the "Grog Blog" on October 9, 2008. The Grog Blog was where the team of developers post news bulletins relating to the game's events and content, as well as gave players a direct line to leave comments about new game features, ask questions, and connect with other players around the world.[8][9] For instance, by January 27, 2009, the Grog Blog shared an update to the site.[10] In 2013, the Grog Blog shut down when Pirates Online closed.[1]
Historically, grog was invented by Admiral Edward Vernon around 1740. The timeline established in the Pirates franchise sets the first chronological mention of grog in the Pirates universe a few decades earlier.[citation needed]
