pirates

The term fanon, a portmanteau of fan and canon,[1] generally refers to fan-made fiction. Fan fiction (also spelled fanfiction and often abbreviated fanfic) is an unlicensed story or unoffical information created and written by a fan based on a licensed product that is mistaken for (or promoted as) canon that takes place in an established fictional universe, such as Pirates of the Caribbean. Such fiction is unrecognized by The Walt Disney Company and is therefore non-canon. Similarly, the term "headcanon" is used to describe a fan's personal interpretation of a fictional universe.[2] It applies to certain "facts" that may have been accepted as a truth by a large number of fans, although not necessarily true, and thus either replaces an established canonical fact in the minds of those fans or fills a plot-hole.

Notable examples include the full names of characters, like Gillette (Andrew Gillette),[3] Teague (Grant or Teague Sparrow),[4] and Angelica (Angelica Malon),[5] but also not supported by any official source.

Fanon made official

Geoffrey Rush portrayed Hector Barbossa in the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Although only credited as "Barbossa" in the trilogy, Johnny Depp came up with "Hector" as Barbossa's first name on set of The Curse of the Black Pearl, though it was only mentioned in the DVD commentary.[6] Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio initially thought "Hector Barbossa" was fan-made when they saw it on the Internet, but decided to use it nonetheless.[7][8] While Elliott and Rossio wrote "Hector" into the screenplay for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End,[9] the name first appeared in the video game adaptation.[10]

Greg Ellis portrayed Theodore Groves, originally named "Officer" in the credits, in The Curse of the Black Pearl. According to Ellis, as recalled in a post (under the username "Lieutenant Groves") in Keep to the Code forums in January 2008, there was a group of fans on another forum who decided to give his character a name after The Curse of the Black Pearl released. There were many contenders, but when the votes were tallied "Theodore" was the winner, and seemed to fit him well.[11] The name "Groves" was first published in the At World's End junior novel in 2007,[12] having also been written in a late production draft, titled Calypso's Fury, dated 2006.[9] By May 2010, the full name "Theodore Groves" was reportedly revealed by an article from The Hollywood Reporter, also shared by Ellis, prior to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides going into production.[13] While the name "Groves" appeared in most media, the character was identified as "Theodore Groves" in one of Peter Mountain's promotional images[14] and during Ellis's appearance in the Pirates of the Caribbean marathon at the El Capitan Theatre in 2011.[15]

Fanon and the Pirates of the Caribbean Wiki

The Pirates of the Caribbean Wiki is intended to serve as an encyclopedia of official, Disney-sanctioned Pirates of the Caribbean material; as such, fanon isn't accepted in its articles. This includes historical events or individuals, despite their basis in fact, without having been referenced in any Pirates source.

The Pirates of the Caribbean Fanon Wiki is an alternative Pirates of the Caribbean website where anyone is encouraged to create their own (or embellish existing) Pirates stories.
