A crow on a coffin.
A crow, also known as raven, were any of several larger-bodied bird species of the genus Corvus. These species do not form a single taxonomic group within the genus. There is no consistent distinction between "crows" and "ravens", and these appellations have been assigned to different species chiefly on the basis of their size.
Behind the scenes
The birds (used interchangeably as "crow" and "raven") first appear in media relating to the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest,[1] notably Irene Trimble's junior novelization.[2]
According to Ted Elliott, the last shot made for Dead Man's Chest was the raven pecking on Jack Sparrow's coffin.[3] This was after two weeks of filming night scenes, from sunset to sunrise.[4]
