- "Captain Villanueva used the Centurion to fight both Chevalle and Ammand for the right to plunder the Mediterranean."
- ―Unknown
The Centurion was a galleon active during the Age of Piracy. It was most notably under the command of Captain Eduardo Villanueva, the Pirate Lord of the Adriatic Sea, and the Spanish Treasure Fleet. Villanueva sailed the Centurion during the quest for the Shadow Gold and the war against Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Trading Company.
History
- "Hey, François. Am I drunker than I thought? Is that a ship coming in?"
"But—there is no wind."
"And the oars aren't moving."
"Is it the Flying Dutchman?"
"No. That's a Jolly Roger. But whose?"
"Villanueva. But where is his crew? Where is he?"
"I don't know. But I'm not staying to find out!" - ―Louis and François
Little is known of the Centurion other than it was a galleon,[4] as well as the ship of Captain Eduardo Villanueva of Spain, the Pirate Lord of the Adriatic Sea, and became his favorite ship from his personal privateer fleet, the Spanish Treasure Fleet. With the Centurion, Villanueva crossed paths and swords with the Barbary Corsairs led by Ammand, Lord of the Black Sea, as well as Chevalle, Lord of the Mediterranean Sea,[1] who all fought for the right to plunder the Mediterranean.[5] The Centurion flew Villanueva's Jolly Roger, a black flag with a white skeleton and a red heart.[1][6]
On one occasion, Villanueva and his crew sailed off the coast of Spain, when they encountered two burning wrecks, victims of a band of rogue pirates. A few months later, the Centurion docked in Shipwreck Cove, and Villanueva told the tale of his discovery to assembled Pirate Lords, led by Captain Edward Teague. All the Pirate Lords at the meeting agreed to take actions against the rogues, to prevent the navies of Europe from declaring war on piracy.[7] A few days later, while looking for Jack Sparrow, Teague knew that Captain Villaneuva was hosting a game of Hazard aboard the Centurion, and thought Jack might be aboard his vessel.[8]

During the search for the Shadow Gold, the Centurion was commandeered by the Shadow Lord who used it to sail from the Caribbean to Marseilles, France. Two sailors, François and Louis, mistook the Centurion as the Flying Dutchman, unaware that Villanueva and his whole crew were captured.[6] However, Villanueva's crew were freed a few days later when Jack Sparrow and the French Pirate Lord Chevalle came onboard.[9] Years later, the Fourth Brethren Court convened and declared war against Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Trading Company, and Villanueva's crew aboard the Centurion was part of the fleet of pirate ships that witnessed the battle.[1]
Design and appearance
Contradicting most of the requirements of a good pirate ship, the Centurion was a lumbering monstrosity. Nevertheless, she was a seaworthy vessel, and Villanueva proudly used the enormous galleon as a flagship of his fleet, and to sail around many of the Seven Seas.[10] She was relatively slow compared to the supernatural speed of the Black Pearl, but she also had a set of oars to propel the ship when there was no wind, giving her advantage over ships that relied solely on sails.[3]
Behind the scenes
The Centurion first appeared in media relating to the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[1] It was first identified by name in the Pirates of the Caribbean PocketModel game.[5]
